Massacre in Baghdad - by Mohammad Azim Khan Keyani

Massacre in Baghdad
By Mohammad Azim Khan Keyani

What happened on 19 August 2003 Oh my God!
Many UN officials were killed in the city of Baghdad

To hear about tragic incident everyone was shocked
Due to sudden sad news blood in hearts was blocked

They were international civil servants, not military troops
Were serving the humanity, did not belong to any groups

Had nothing to do with politics of any kind
Such thing could happen, was not in anybody’s mind

Suddenly at UN Headquarters there was a big blast
In few seconds many precious lives were lost

Rescue workers to the place were immediately hurried
To help victims and save those under debris buried

Millions of people on TV witnessed this scene
How fearful and painful this incident had been

People did not believe and thought they were dreaming
Our friends in Iraq were crying for help and screaming

At the place of incident there was a lot of blood
It seemed that there had come a red flood

To human sufferings those who had come to aid
Can one imagine their bodies into pieces were made?

Death of almost 22 people gave us a big pain
It included Mr Mellow and Mr Klein-Beekman

Almost one hundred people got serious injuries
Memories of such incidents remain for centuries

Are praying day and night all friends and lovers
Hope each injured person so soon recovers

UN staff security is important, the need is quite strong
To any country, creed, culture or religion they belong

No matter, whoever performed this kind of act
Human life has been considered like that of an insect

How sad affected families and what will be they thinking
No one knows to whom this act world would be linking

What message do we give to humanitarian agencies and donors
Not to provide protection to people’s lives and honours

To any conflict UN is neither party nor directly involved
It only helps nations to have their problems resolved

Till long during whole year from January to December
To ‘dears’ of 19 August many people will remember

Those working for a very gentle and noble cause
Should not have been murdered so brutally Alas!

Were someone’s children, parents, husbands and wives
These people, for a great cause, gave their lives

Whole world stands behind them, there is no doubt
Affected families deserve our fullest moral support

Such people earn good name when they die in this way
Life is only once and one has to ‘leave’ one day

It is a great sin to kill people who are innocent
God will punish the culprits be sure hundred percent

Please do not kill UN officials and also not attack
Benefit from humanitarian services and stay at its back

It is hoped that UN will be provided full protection
In Iraq its good work will face no rejection

Let us all try to bring in this world complete peace
Instead of being revengeful, exercise forgiveness please

This is not first incident but also in the past
People became handicapped and many lives were lost

United Nations work continues with great transparency
And tries its best to reach everywhere in an emergency

Support is provided in form of goods, services and currency
Others have always appreciated our organization’s efficiency

Is fully committed to provide help to each agency
Whole world has always recognized UN competency

Children and women may suffer badly if UN stops
Who will provide Vitamin A capsules and polio drops?

There is also a need for different types of vaccines
Children may die in Iraq due to shortage of medicines

Who will provide to poor children nutritious diets?
Who will endeavour to fight for their legitimate rights?

Who will try to save them from HIV/AIDS infection?
And who will work in Iraq for child protection?

Who will take care of environmental sanitation and water?
Situation of women health is also another matter

Iraq may need appropriate support in education sector
UN in this field can play role of a major actor
A lot of work is needed to rebuild infrastructure
Without doing this can’t promote industry or agriculture

We are non-political and neutral, it is understood
All appreciate our role, which is always considered good

UN purpose in Iraq is only to serve that country
All citizens are equal irrespective of any community

Not only in one country, UN exists everywhere
Wherever there is a genuine need, its staff goes there

People who work in emergencies, enjoy a lot of regard
Not only the society but God will also reward

When we face difficulties for others, we feel satisfied
In serving human beings more lives can be sacrificed

Terrorism may not be a solution, but the dialogue
May start soon to settle present and previous backlog

Try to forget what happened in past and forgive each others
The best option is to live in this world like sisters and brothers
